Bathrooms are small rooms with every trade in them, and the waterproofing details behind the tile decide whether the job lasts ten years or two.

Waterproofing is the whole job
Tile is not waterproof and neither is grout. A shower needs a continuous waterproof membrane behind or on the substrate, correct slope to the drain, and proper treatment at corners, curbs and niches. Most shower failures we tear out were built on green board or unsealed cement board with no membrane at all.
What a full remodel includes
- Demolition and inspection of the subfloor and framing for prior water damage
- Plumbing and electrical rough-in updates, including GFCI protection
- Waterproofed shower or tub surround assembly
- Tile, vanity, fixtures, trim and paint
- An exhaust fan sized to the room and ducted through the roof or wall to the outside
Accessibility
Curbless showers, blocking for grab bars, comfort-height fixtures and wider door openings are straightforward to build in during a remodel and expensive to retrofit later. Worth deciding now if anyone plans to stay in the house long term.

- How long will my bathroom be out of service?
- A typical full remodel runs a few weeks, driven mostly by tile, waterproofing cure times and fixture lead times.
- Can you move the shower or toilet?
- Yes, though relocating a toilet drain means opening the floor and is a bigger cost than moving a supply line.
- Where should the bath fan vent?
- Outside, through the roof or a wall cap. Never into the attic, which is a common cause of attic mold here.
