What happens behind the siding
The visible panel is a rain screen. The weather barrier is the house wrap and the flashing at windows, doors and transitions. When siding is replaced without addressing torn wrap or missing window head flashing, water keeps getting into the wall. We open enough of the wall to see what we are dealing with and correct it before the new material goes on.
Hail and wind damage to siding
Hail cracks vinyl, especially in cold weather, and chips or holes fiber cement. Wind pulls panels loose at the locking course. Damage often shows on one or two elevations, typically the side the storm came from, which is a point that comes up regularly during adjuster meetings. We document siding damage on the same inspection as the roof. See insurance restoration.
Matching existing siding
Older siding lines get discontinued, and colors fade. If an exact match is not available for a partial replacement, we will tell you before the work starts rather than after, and we will lay out the options, which usually means pulling material from a less visible elevation or replacing a full elevation.
Common questions
- Can you replace just the damaged section?
- Often yes, if the profile and color are still available. We check availability before quoting a partial.
- Vinyl or fiber cement?
- Vinyl costs less and installs faster. Fiber cement is heavier, holds paint well and takes impact better, at a higher price. Both are reasonable choices here.
- Do you do soffit and fascia?
- Yes, and it matters for attic intake ventilation, so we look at it alongside the roof.
