What Forensic ROOF® means
NRCIA describes its Forensic ROOF® concept as a customized inspection addressing a selected issue or technical attribute of a roofing system. A question about storm effects is not the same as a question about installation. The engagement should identify the issue first; the methods, accessible areas and reporting then follow that scope. Questions an engagement might examine
- What roof conditions are observable after a reported storm, and what other causes should be considered?
- Does a specific installed detail appear consistent with an applicable manufacturer instruction?
- Is a questioned roofing detail consistent with the applicable code requirements identified for that scope?
- What observable evidence bears on workmanship or a third party's potential responsibility?
- Is a selected technical attribute of the roof system performing as expected?
Documents matter. Plans, product instructions, installation dates, prior photographs and the actual code edition can change what a technical comparison means. Where those records are missing or access is limited, the report should say so. An inspection does not automatically establish fault, causation, code noncompliance or a claim outcome.
Methods and boundaries
A visual evaluation can document roof surfaces, edges, drainage and accessible interior or attic evidence. Testing, sample removal, destructive access or specialized engineering analysis are not assumed; they require agreement on scope and, where appropriate, referral to a qualified specialist. The report records the findings, photographs, assumptions and limitations relevant to the question.
What happens after findings are issued?
The client decides what to do with the opinion. It can inform a repair decision, a discussion with a carrier or a further specialist review, but it does not decide legal liability, litigation or insurance coverage. If construction is later needed, ARCC's roofing work is a separate discussion.
