Metal Roofing in Southwest Missouri
Metal is a long-service roof when it is detailed correctly, and a persistent leak problem when it is not. The difference is almost always in the panel terminations, the fasteners and the transitions.

Standing seam vs. exposed fastener
Standing seam hides the fasteners under the raised seam, which means no rubber washers sitting in the weather and no fastener holes through the panel field. It costs more and takes longer to install. Exposed fastener panels are economical and appropriate for shops, barns and outbuildings, but the screws and washers are the wear point and will eventually need attention.
Thermal movement
Metal panels expand and contract with temperature swings, and Southwest Missouri gives them plenty of both. Panels have to be able to move at the eave and ridge. Fastening a long panel rigidly at both ends is how you get elongated holes, backed-out screws and oil canning.

- Low-pitch porch and bay roofs where shingles are marginal
- Shops, barns and equipment buildings
- Homes where the owner wants a roof they are not planning to touch again
- Commercial buildings with existing metal that can be repaired or coated rather than replaced
Repair and coating of existing metal
On an existing metal roof with sound panels, replacing fasteners, sealing seams and applying a coating system is often a better value than a tear-off. We will tell you which side of that line your roof falls on after we look at it.
Common questions
- Is metal noisy in the rain?
- Over a solid deck with underlayment, far less than people expect. Over open purlins on a shop building, yes, it is audible.
- Can metal go over an existing shingle roof?
- Sometimes, with the right framing or underlayment detail, but we generally prefer a tear-off so the deck can be inspected.
- Does metal cost more than shingles?
- Up front, yes, usually significantly. The argument for it is service life, not first cost.
